Summoning Interfaces

DesignUI/UX

A good interface feels inevitable. As if it could not have been any other way. That feeling is not an accident — it is the residue of a hundred decisions you were never meant to notice.

This is a draft. A sketch of a longer piece about how interfaces get summoned rather than merely built.

Familiar, but strange

The best products feel familiar and otherworldly at once. Familiar enough that you already know how to use them. Strange enough that using them feels a little bit like delight.

Comfort is table stakes. Wonder is the tip.

The trick is to spend your novelty budget carefully. Be conventional everywhere the user needs confidence, and surprising only where surprise is a gift.

The design system as grimoire

A component library is a book of spells. Each component is an incantation that has been tested, named, and made repeatable so that the next person does not have to rediscover the magic from scratch.

  • A Button is a promise about what a click will feel like.
  • A Card is a promise about how information clusters.
  • Spacing tokens are the meter of the poem.

When the grimoire is good, building a new screen feels less like construction and more like arrangement.

Still summoning

More to come. This transmission is not finished — the ritual is ongoing.

Draft. Do not trust the details yet.
